John Marshall Harlan from Plessy v. Ferguson. My cousin from Kentucky was a deeply flawed man, but chose the right side of history. It's the condemned ghosts of the other seven that continue to haunt us.
Let's get uncomfortable. Why? Because this issue won't go away on its own. Especially when otherwise intelligent people say unintelligent things. THIS ... should be a litmus test for any government sanctioned public display.
My neighbor moved into their house two years ago. Last month they put it on the market. And? It was sold before the end of THAT day - at $220k more than they bought it for. Do we have a housing problem? Or just a crisis?
I wouldn’t ethically have an issue with the “death penalty”. Except. It is the output of an inherently flawed mechanism. Every aspect of the system – the defendant included – is entirely based on humans being competent and “truthful”.
Most of humanity’s ills can be traced to one problem. We are selfish. Our opinion, time, talents, wants, desires – are more “equal”. But. This can’t be solved with laws. Or through force. We evolve together. Or perish together.
An academic argument for “rights” is that they safeguard a minority from the masses. And. In theory. Prevent one individual’s “rights” from infringing upon another’s. But. In practice? America has a less-than-perfect score.
Before we get to the future of floating recliners … there will be a very painful “adjustment” period. And. I promise. That pain will NOT be distributed equally. Air, water, food. A human right? Or. A luxury good?
Squirdevil Sungday? Is the concept of pegs and holes a static reality? Or. Do we have the ability to reshape them as we see fit? I believe humans have a natural right to be who they want to be in order to pursue happiness.
